The short answer

Public Instagram URL or saved video?
Use a public URL when the post can be opened without an Instagram login and its media can be reached by the fetch path. The page needs the URL only to obtain the public media; speech recognition starts in your browser after the media is available.
Upload a saved file when the post is private, deleted, login-gated, region-restricted, or the URL returns a page without playable media. The upload path accepts MP4, MOV and WebM files up to 100 MB. Use only a copy you have permission to process.
A correct-looking link can still fail because a session is required, the media address has expired, or the response has no audio track. A saved file bypasses that URL-specific failure, but a silent video still has no spoken words to transcribe.
What the text output looks like
The result is divided into recognized speech segments and tied to the point where each segment begins:

TXT is best for searching, editing, quoting, and notes. SRT adds numbered subtitle cues with start and end times for a compatible editor or player. The SRT is made from recognized speech segments; it is not Instagram's original caption track.
Where processing happens
For an uploaded file, the page decodes the media and runs the English speech model on your device. The file is not placed in an upload queue, and the transcript is not stored as an account record. For a public URL, the site has to fetch the public media first, so that network step is different from the local upload path.
The browser model works in short audio passes. The first visit can take longer because the model must load; later runs can reuse the cached model. The privacy boundary and current limits are described on the privacy page.
How long does Instagram video to text take?
These are measured browser timings on one machine using the WASM path. They are single observations, not averages, and do not include the time needed to fetch a particular Instagram URL.

Check the transcript before using it
Music, sound effects, fast speech, accents, names, numbers, and overlapping speakers can change the output. Replay the relevant timestamp before publishing a quote or using the words as an official record. The current browser model is English-focused, so non-English speech should be treated as a draft.

Can I convert a private Instagram video from its URL?
No. The public URL path needs media available without a login. If you are allowed to use the video, save it and upload the local file instead.
Does this read text written in the Reel?
No. It recognizes spoken audio. Post captions, comments, and text displayed inside the frames are separate content.
